Holly Haynes: Impact and Income on a Part-Time Schedule

In this episode, Holly Haynes and I interview each other in a conversation that we are sharing on each of our platforms. Holly is a productivity coach and business strategist that has learned how to create a full-time income on part-time hours. We talk about the philosophies behind each of our businesses and how they have guided us to be bold in pursuing our visions.

[03:34] HOLLY’S BACKGROUND

Holly and I met through a mastermind that we are both a part of. Holly shares some background on her origin story. She raised newborn twins and a teenager at the same time which gave her a different perspective on her life. She was in corporate strategy for about 20 years, but she realized it wasn’t everything that she thought it would be. She got inspired by hearing about a woman who had started her own business, and in January 2020, she decided to branch out on her own. She gave herself a one year challenge to start a coaching business helping female entrepreneurs. And then the pandemic happened. So she started sharing what she was doing and how it was working. It caught on. Two years later, both Holly and her husband have retired from their jobs and they have a full-time business.

[07:18] MY BACKGROUND

I grew up in a small town in the middle of the midwest with a cornfield in the middle of my backyard. While it was great for many reasons, there wasn’t a lot of ambition outside of the norm modeled by the other people in the town. Something told me that I wouldn’t stay there. At a time where there was a lot going on in life, I signed up for the YMCA and began taking group exercise classes. Several months in, I was asked to teach. Even though I had no idea what I was doing, I said yes, and that decision has changed the entire trajectory of my life. I was aligned with my path and what I was called to do.

[12:38] ACTION OVER PERFECTION

Holly started a podcast from scratch in a pandemic while working a full-time job. Holly didn’t really know what she was doing, but she knew she wanted to create a community. She based it off of a blog post and just went for it. Since then she’s put a new episode out every week. She learned that taking action was helpful instead of striving for perfection. That has become part of her philosophy in what she teaches. When thinking about a podcast topic, Holly recommends sharing information around what people are asking you. It’s also so important to love what you’re doing.

[18:28] ONE-ON-ONES WITH CLIENTS

When it came to her business, starting out, Holly wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to create. She recommends starting out with one-on-one sessions with clients. People would find her through the podcast, then become one-on-one clients. The planner came after that. When deciding what to charge clients, Holly recommends thinking about how much you want to earn in the year and then break that down to find out your hourly value.

[29:07] SIMPLE HABITS DAILY CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

I share about a moment in September 2020, when the women in my community were trying to figure out how to navigate the unpredictable situation. My workout program at the time got me thinking about the concept of 100. I looked up the day when there would be 100 days left in the year and it was the very next Monday. That got me thinking… What if I built a group around a set of small habits that you do every single day. These habits are simple, but if done everyday, can change your life.

[33:45] MOVE THE NEEDLE

Holly asks about how I went from an idea to actually making it happen. My philosophy is based in fitness and movement. I built on top of my Beachbody coaching business and created a group around it. Everything I have achieved in my life has been done steadily and consistently. That is the idea behind Project100. It all comes down to what you are doing each day that moves you in the direction that you want to go.

[40:03] MY VISION FOR 2022

Holly and I talk about our goals and our visions for 2022. I keep coming back to the idea “how do I serve at a higher level?” “How do I support women at a higher level?” My house in Florida is serving as a magnet for the next thing that I am building.

[42:48] LET’S TALK PLANNERS

Holly and I both have planners. Her idea came from listening to a podcast and learning about a company called North + Third. They helped her create her quarterly planner. It is based around the idea of balancing family and work and working towards your goals on a quarterly basis. From there it is broken down into months and invites you to check in with your goals.

[46:06] THE CAKE METHOD

Holly talks about the planner and getting clear on her process. She created The Cake Method which involves the three most important things that need to get done daily. If you start your list with 25 things to do each day, you will consistently set yourself up to fail. If you accomplish the three most important things, not only will you feel good about yourself for accomplishing them, but you can also allow yourself some free time to enjoy the day. Her planner helps women hold themselves accountable to get those three things done. Her concept is similar to my concept of The Focused Five.

[50:26] WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 2022 FOR HOLLY

2022 is a reset year for Holly. She is trying to give herself space to let things settle. She is leading a mastermind of her own. She also has a vision for a children’s journal.

[53:40] IF SOMETHING IS CALLING TO YOU, JUST START

The biggest advice I would give to someone who is starting a business now is to just START. Stop waiting for someone to tell you what to do and just figure it out. If something is calling to your heart, just start. Just keep figuring it out. You are so much smarter than you think you are!
