You Are Not Lost

October 4, 2023

I’ve been seeing it on social media and hearing from so many of you as you are transitioning into a new season of parenthood. It could be that you’re an official empty nester like me. It could be that you’re starting the empty nest dress rehearsal. That’s what I call it when your kids are in college.

I thought your kids going to college was empty nesting. I was very wrong, and I know that now because I’m on the other side of that, and where I am now is actually empty nesting. A little bit more challenging to transition through, I think. And you might be moving into your kids going into high school.

You might be moving into your kids going to kindergarten. You could just be transitioning into a new season of parenting somewhere along the journey, a challenging moment, a challenging season.

Rediscovering Your Identity and Purpose in Parenthood Transitions

And this is what I see so often on social media, and what I hear from so many of you, it’s this idea that as your children grow up and as they move into their next milestone, that you are lost.

Does that sound familiar? Have you felt yourself saying that? Have you felt yourself feeling that? First and foremost, all feelings are valid, so it’s okay to feel that way. I wanna offer a reframe for you today. You aren’t lost. You, me, we are simply in a new place. We’re just in a new season of life.

And when you’re going through it, whether it’s an empty nest, whether it’s business challenges, whether it’s life challenges, personal challenges, family challenges, whatever, this mindset shift can make all the difference.

I believe the easy way out is to say I’m lost and then just do nothing about it. I see that with so many women. They say they’re lost. Did they go on social media? They’re so sad. And if I could just remind myself, you, anyone, that the reason why our children are moving on to the next milestone of life is because we ourselves also moved on to the next milestone of life.

At some point in time, we left home and had children, and now they’re into that next milestone of life. And the easy way out is just to say, well, I’m lost.

And it’s true that women get really caught up in our children, and our identity, our self identity gets really caught up in our children. And it takes some time sometimes to remember that we are actually human beings with goals and dreams.

And we were human beings before. We perhaps had a partner in life, and had children. We are human beings. And if you’re going through a challenging season and you’re stepping into that next chapter, it’s easy to say I’m lost and then just do nothing about it. I don’t think that’s you, though. Hey, friend. Here’s what I know for sure.

I don’t think you would listen to a podcast called Crank It Up if you were a person who wanted to sit in the lost, who wanted to sulk, who wanted to be sad all the time, I think you know who you are. I don’t think it’s a matter of finding yourself. I think it’s a matter of reminding yourself. Let me say that again.

Remembering We Are Human Beings With Dreams and Goals

I don’t think it’s a matter of finding yourself. I think it’s a matter of reminding yourself. And the more you talk about how you feel, acknowledge how you feel that you’re in a new season of life.

So you might feel a little sideways, and you reach out to other women, ask how they navigated it. See, here’s the deal. Everyone asks how the kids are doing. No one asks how the mom’s doing. And then it’s a real easy out for the mom to go, well, I’m just lost.

I don’t know what to do. That’s not you. You don’t need to find yourself. You just need to remind yourself that you are a human being with goals and dreams. And, yes, it might take you a minute to kinda get your ground underneath you again, to get a little bit of traction, have a little bit of structure and clarity as to where you’re going, but you’ll get there.

You’ll get there. And if you need someone who’s going through it with you, I got you because I’m going through it too. And here’s what I know.

We’re all better together. We can figure this out. And along the way, we can crank it up because you’re a human being that has amazing goals and dreams. It’s time for you to go after them.
