In this episode, my guest is Suzannah Otis and we’re talking about two things I love, Disney and eating plant-based. Suzannah has experience working for Disney as a cast member, writing a successful blog, and now running Vegan Disney Food, where she highlights the best vegan options in each park. Whether or not you eat a plant-based diet, this episode will get you excited about trying new things and thinking outside of the box at Disney.
[02:51] ORIGIN STORY
Suzannah has always been a Disney fan and she’s been in the Disney space for about 13 years. She decided to turn her passion for Disney into a blog, which became a big success. Suzannah shares her history with being a vegetarian and switching to a completely plant-based diet. Her journey led her to take over Vegan Disney Food for a friend of hers.
[07:21] TOP TIPS FOR EATING PLANT BASED AT WDW
Suzannah points out that some of the vegan food at Disney is vegan junk food, vs vegan food made from whole foods, but there is a good variety depending on what you’re looking for. Though some things have changed through the pandemic, Disney is always coming out with new plant-based options. Suzannah’s number one tip is to give the plant-based options a try and see what you love.
[09:31] CHEESE SO GOOD YOU WON’T MISS DAIRY
Both Suzannah and I agree that giving up cheese was a difficult part of making the transition to becoming vegan. But plant-based cheeses have improved so much in the last five years. Disney is starting to incorporate some exciting new plant-based cheese options into their dishes.
[11:25] DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS
Suzannah used to be intimidated about asking questions about diet specifications when visiting Disney. But she has learned that it’s always best to speak to a chef. Disney will accommodate your diet or preference. Suzanna encourages people to ask the chefs about the off menu options and see what they may be able to make for you. It’s okay to think outside of the box!
[21:34] THE FLOWER & GARDEN FESTIVAL AT EPCOT
Suzannah shares some of her favorite plant-based options at the Flower & Garden at Epcot, including some vegan junk food options. She loves it so much, from time to time, she even has her husband get take out for her while she’s working.
[25:04] EATING PLANT BASED AT THE RESORTS
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to be staying on property to go to the restaurants at the resorts. But everyone can enjoy them! Suzannah really likes the Cape May Cafe. There is a chef there named Chef TJ who makes an amazing eight course vegan meal with incredible service. Steakhouse 71 is a newly opened restaurant that is also a must visit.
