In this episode, I talk with Grace Brown who is also a huge believer in habits, mindset and aligned action. Grace is a certified Master Mindset Life Coach and Founder of Momentum Mindset Mastery LLC. She’s passionate about helping women overcome their mindset blocks and create more positive momentum in their lives. We discuss how Grace’s curiosity about people led her to this work, we break down the stories we tell ourselves around habits, and we discuss the importance of your mindset in making changes in your life.
[02:40] ORIGIN STORY
Grace was always curious about why people do what they do, and she would try to interpret that. She experienced a loss that started to bring out some dark thoughts for her and that’s how she started to dive into mindset work. She realized that she could proactively learn to have more control over her thoughts, feelings and actions.
[06:52] SKILLS ARE TRANSFERABLE
Grace shares some of her earliest memories growing up in a military family and her dreams of what she wanted to be when she grew up. Living in a variety of places with exposure to so many different cultures sparked her curiosity to people’s motivations of doing different things. Grace talks about the skills she gained in customer service and recruiting work and how those skills are transferable to coaching.
[16:57] DIVING INTO MINDSET
Having the desire makes you qualified because it gets you into the momentum of what you want. When you use empowering language around it, vs language that creates resistance, you will start looking for ways that you can make it happen. It starts with how you think and how you speak about yourself. Grace shares how it’s possible to create new neural pathways around habits.
[20:20] CREATING HABITS
Women often create resistance for themselves when starting something new. Instead of getting caught up in comparisons or what you don’t have, sometimes you have to just start. It’s okay to start small. Every time you say something around a habit, you’re reinforcing that which creates your identity. Start where you’re at now and make it simple for yourself. You can create a new identity around that.
[37:25] USING COMMUNITY TO STICK TO HABITS
Both Grace and I agree that community is so important to sticking with habits and working towards your goals. Not everyone has to understand what you’re trying to do, but having a community of people that do understand is so helpful. It allows you to celebrate your progress.
[40:57] HABITS ARE ALL FORMED THE SAME WAY
Habits are all formed the same way, good or bad. While planning is great, it all comes down to thought, action and just starting to do it. We are all visionaries, but we have to have aligned action. If we make it too big, it’s easy to talk ourselves out of it. If we create drama around the habit, we attract more drama. Grace reinforces the importance of starting small.
