Embracing Midlife: Navigating the Empty Nest and Finding Your Joy Again

julie outside in the fall as an empty nester

Being an empty-nester is more than “so much free time” and “doing whatever you want now”.

It’s a wild season of figuring out who you are NOW. Yes it is kind of cool to not be making lunches and driving kids all over the place all the time.

Not to mention, I LOVE the conversations and experiences I can have now with my amazing grown up girls.

BUT it’s not an easy transition for most of us and the inner work IS what will help you navigate it. So to my fellow midlife moms + empty-nesters, know this… you will be okay.

The Unexpected Journey of an Empty Nester

Life is a series of transitions, and one of the most significant shifts happens when we find ourselves entering the empty nest phase. This period often coincides with midlife changes, such as perimenopause and menopause, marking it as a crucial time for self-care and personal growth.

In the bustle of raising children, it’s easy to sideline our needs. However, as the nest empties and we enter a new season of life, it becomes critical to refocus on ourselves.

Adopting new habits, such as lifting weights and incorporating more protein into our diet, are parts of the recalibration process. These practices help maintain our physical health as we navigate the changes brought about by perimenopause and menopause.

Don’t be misled by the misguided notion that these changes alone can solve all issues. Understanding and embracing this phase requires a holistic approach that addresses not only our physical but also our emotional health.

Being an empty nester is so much more than just “having lots of free time” or “doing whatever you desire”. It’s a transformative journey, a wild season of self-discovery where you get to explore and understand who you are now.

Yes, it’s indeed a kind of freedom to not be constantly making lunches and chauffeuring kids around. However, the transition isn’t always easy for most of us.

The conversations and experiences you can now have with your grown-up children are indeed priceless. The bond strengthens, and conversations shift from school and activities to deeper, more meaningful topics. This new phase of parenthood is as exciting as it is challenging.

The challenge lies in the transition – the sudden quietness of the house, the absence of the routine you’ve known for years, and the sense of loss that sometimes accompanies these changes.

But be assured, you will be okay. In fact, you can be more than okay. You can thrive and find new joy and purpose in this season of life.

The Importance of Inner Work and Building a Supportive Community

The key to navigating this transition is to focus on the inner work. This involves gaining self-awareness, regaining your confidence, and redefining your community. It requires you to explore new interests, reignite old passions, and construct a supportive network around you.

It’s not flashy or “click-baity” to talk about attending therapy or unpacking generational baggage. Yet these are the conversations we need to have.

Navigating through midlife and being an empty nester can bring about a myriad of emotions. It’s crucial to acknowledge these feelings and seek professional help if needed. Shedding the weight of the past can significantly improve our outlook and help us enter this new stage with a lighter heart and a clearer mind.

As a seasoned mother who has successfully navigated the challenges and joys of midlife, I am here to provide guidance and support on this profound journey. With years of experience under my belt, I am passionate about assisting other parents who find themselves in the ’empty nest’ phase of life.

I believe that it’s possible to find your footing once again and to rediscover the joy and fulfillment that this stage of life can offer.
