Today we are talking about the idea of decision fatigue. We make SO many decisions on a daily basis, no wonder we are exhausted at the end of the day! In this episode, I invite you to think about the things that you can do to free up some of your mental energy. What can you automate in your life? By doing this, you can create space and energy for your passions and the things that truly matter.
As you know, I do Energize live every day. Recently, one of the topics we discussed was decision fatigue. Think about how many decisions we make every day and how exhausting that can be. Even with the best intentions, at the end of the day, sometimes we fall into unbeneficial decisions simply because we are tired from decision fatigue.
[02:50] MY DAD’S PAINTINGS
It wasn’t until after my Dad retired that he was able to realize his skill of painting. I feel he found his talent at that point in his life because he had decision fatigue while maneuvering through daily life of being a busy person with a career.
[04:08] TOO MUCH ENERGY DECIDING
As women and as moms, we wake up with a mental list of everything we need to do that day, and all the decisions we will make. And we wonder why we don’t have the energy for a passion project, a workout, or the things that light up our souls. We may not even have the energy to make the nutritious decisions that we wanted to make for ourselves. Because we spent so much energy deciding on all the details throughout the day.
Automation can be a simple solution for decision fatigue. The first way you can automate your morning is to skip the snooze button. By doing so, you don’t have to spend any mental energy thinking about if or when you’re getting up. Or how many times you will hit the snooze button. Another way that I eliminate decision fatigue is having all-black workout leggings. Then I don’t need to spend energy on deciding which colors of leggings I will wear. And I already know that I’m wearing black and everything in my closet will go with it.
[8:38] NO MENTAL ENERGY NEEDED IN MY MORNING ROUTINE
Because I have already decided what my morning routine is, in the first couple hours of the day, I already know what I’m going to do. There’s no decision to be made. It’s not motivation, it’s habit. It’s automation.
[11:23] THE MEAT OF MY DAY
By the time I get to the meat of my day, I still have so much mental energy to give because I have automated so much of my morning routine. Humans function much better with routine and structure, but sometimes we forget that it’s not just kids and babies that need it. We need it as grown-ups too.
[14:47] THE CEOS THAT AUTOMATE
Think about Steve Jobs. When you see him, he is usually wearing a black turtleneck and jeans. He is always wearing the same thing when we see him because he has more important things to worry about than what he is going to wear that day. It’s the same thing with the CEO of Beachbody, Carl Daikeler.
[16:20] WHERE AND WHAT CAN YOU AUTOMATE?
Think about your life and the things that you can automate. When we dig into structure and routine, we have more energy and we feel more flow in our lives. By automating, imagine what other skills you could uncover when you free up some space in your mental energy.
